Plate & Construction Steel Products Business
We aim to meet new challenges in a wide range of fields, both now and in the future.
One of our core businesses is the sale of steel plates for Japanese and overseas manufacturers of ships, construction machinery, and industrial machinery. However, in addition to this, another important business is the sale of steel plates and shaped steel for projects related to overseas natural resources, energy, and infrastructure.
In particular, we are focused on making equipment and materials for offshore wind power facilities a pillar of our future business operations, including business investment.
For our construction materials business, we aim to establish a presence in the construction industry by directly managing our companies in that area.
Specialty Steel Business
Specialty steels that showcase their individuality in a wide variety of fields
Our business scope is trading in multi-functional and high-grade specialty steel wire and bars, tool steels, and cast and forged products. We also manage subsidiaries and associated companies that serve as hubs for production, processing and our logistics network. Steel wire is used for reinforcing concrete and tires as well as for automobile bolts and springs. Steel bars are used mainly in the automobile industry for crankshafts, gear parts, and bearings. Tool steels are used for tooling dies, and cast and forged products are used in various types of machinery in a wide range of manufacturing fields. With this lineup and our technical knowledge and rich experience in specialty steel processing, we can fulfill every customer’s needs.
Railway Products, Forging & Casting Business
Serving the railway sector and other global transportation organizations
We sell transportation-related components and materials for critical infrastructure-related industries, such as railway, automobiles, construction machinery, and industrial machinery. We also directly manage our companies in these areas. The railway industry in particular is one of the business sectors Sumitomo Corporation has been involved in the longest, and we have business relationships with almost all Japanese railway operators and rolling stock manufacturers. In addition to trading in bogies, wheels, axles, rails, and rail fastening equipment, we have completed and are now operating the world’s first rail carrier ship (150 meters long) for the U.S. We also sell crankshafts — a key component in the automobile, construction machinery, and industrial machinery fields — and we have invested in three global production centers in partnership with Japanese blast furnace manufacturers. We are building a global supply system.
In North America, where railway demand is particularly strong, we have enhanced our local business operations by operating two companies that manufacture wheels, axles, and track components. We are also working on railway projects in Vietnam, Myanmar, India, and Bangladesh. Furthermore, we are focusing on new business development, including digital transformation initiatives in the railway and automobile industries.
